Hello and thank you, my name is Moz Mirbaba and today I am with Greg Gossett – Founder and CEO of HealthAware. For the past 20 years, Greg has been at the forefront of early disease detection and has worked with more than 250 health care systems across the nation.

Moz Mirbaba: I want to switch gears and talk about the consumer journey with healthcare. We live in a world where consumers can get medical information at the swipe of their mobile phone the, internet and there are so many resources out there. And how has this really affected the consumer patient journey and conversations with their doctors and healthcare systems?

Greg Gossett: You know as I look at what hospitals are deploying to evolve and communicate with the consumer. I think every provider considering apps, they all have portals for patients to log onto the Internet, the EMR’s of course also provides portals into patient health record the financial record etc. And of “course add on top of that. Emails, text reminders and voice phone calls coming from their call centers. Beyond that, the consumers have unlimited information at their fingertips just on the Internet.

The consumer is overwhelmed and confused on what to do on their journey.

The consumer is empowered today. The patient is empowered to find information on their own.

So the consumer today expects resources that meet them where they are in their journey and what they need at that moment. And So to put information and resources behind a “firewall” where they have to log in and go retrieve it.  In fact, I know it’s not effective because what I see across most the utilization of these apps and portals. The utilization percentage these apps and portals are between 10-30 percent, which in my opinion you should have more than 50% of your patients at a minimum engaged with your technology

So if we are to evolve with the consumer, we have to use technology that is with them at all times. We look at a couple common resources that healthcare’s use: Risk Assessments.

Let’s talk about Risk Assessment. It’s still a workhorse in today’s market share capture engine across hospitals.

Taking a risk assessment and using a risk assessment once in a patient’s journey, is interesting. But it doesn’t help them on their journey it just gives them a little advice at that moment time, it’s a snapshot, risk assessments need to evolve into tools that help them understand their well-being at that moment in time compared to where they were before, where they’re going what the population around them is like, both locally and national. So this is ways hospitals need should expect to evolve with the consumer.
